When Krystal Sagona was engaged by Active TV to assist with the renovation of their South Melbourne production studio and office, the brief was simple: to express the company’s creativity without alienating the many corporate clients who regularly walked through the doors.
Coupled with a conservative budget and various acoustic issues presented by the building, the project had its challenges.
Krystal Sagona drew influence from the building’s existing gothic timberwork and pitched ceilings, and sought to juxtapose this gothic feel by referencing many of the props from the studio’s shows within the interiors.
Bright, bold, pattered furniture and rug detailing were used to reflect the company’s mission statement of ‘create, produce’, which was also lit up in neon lettering above the banquette bench in one of the studio’s rooms.
Rugs from The Rug Collection and Bloomey chairs from Hub Furniture were chosen to complement items such as a kitsch shark’s head from one of the TV sets, and these rugs and key furniture pieces are carried through within a number of other key rooms.
According to Sagona, the most challenging room was the boardroom where the acoustic issues were addressed with Tretford goat hair ribbed carpet which was affixed directly to the back wall, while dado rails and feature timber mouldings carry through the gothic influence.
The new design has successfully steered this office in a new direction – creating decorated yet usable spaces in what were once forgotten corners of the building. The design adds a multi-dimensional effect and provides the option for staff to either work co-operatively or to seek out individual spaces.
Typography adorning the walls and bright, colourful furniture pieces speak volumes for the company and what it stands for, truly emulating the ability to inspire and create inside this creative space.
