Housed in the bones of the old Capital Hotel towards the St Kilda end of St Kilda Road, Charlie is the sleek new hairdressing salon where patrons are more likely to enjoy a scotch on the rocks than a champagne while hairdressers tend to their locks.
Designed by SJB Interiors, the vision was to recreate the luxury of a high-end residential home in a boutique commercial environment.
Effortlessly combining grey timber floors and walls, black pony hide armchairs, Eames swivel chairs, dramatic sheer curtains and diesel pendant lighting, Charlie has just the right amount of ‘home’ in its elegant design.
Pops of colour in the purple sofa upholstery, a bright green cactus and fluoro pink accessories bring balance to the palette, which Andrew Parr of SJB interiors says provides ‘an eclectic focus on the furniture selection to create semi residential overtones’ in line with the project brief.
Lighting proved challenging in a space where it was imperative not to lose a sense of ambiance and mood in exchange for the well-lit requirements of colour and styling applications.
The solution – clean-lit colouring stations using LED spotlighting to isolate light without flooding the space like a supermarket floor.
St Kilda’s newest resident, Charlie is well dressed and smart without being too clean cut. He likes to keep things interesting and doesn’t mind a good scotch on the rocks once in a while. So next time you’re in St Kilda, why not stop by the old Capital Hotel and join Charlie for a drink.
