When multi-award-winning interior design firm, Carr Design was engaged to create a local presence for Project Thirty Seven – a global consulting company – the designers sought to introduce iconic Melbourne elements into the building’s interiors.
Starting with the reception zone at the building’s entrance, Carr orchestrated an intriguing photo montage installation consisting of imagery depicting the Melbourne team. Carr then collated the individual images into a larger, colour-filled artistic interpretation, to ‘essentially serve three purposes: it creates a kaleidoscope of colour in an otherwise fairly neutral interior, plays down the corporate aesthetic and promotes the congenial nature of the company’ says Carr Design Director, Dan Cox.
According to Carr Design, one of the biggest challenges in Project Thirty Seven’s interior design was the lack of natural light due to the building’s solid, heavy exterior. To combat this ominous, overbearing presence of darkness, Carr introduced a series of mirrored ‘portals’ to the existing window frames which reflect light from all angles and ‘gives the sensation that there are more windows than are actually present’, while also projecting views from the city streets below.‘This is most apparent in the boardroom where reflections of the trams travelling up and down Collins Street traverse throughout the portals’, says Dan.
The designers sought to bring elements of Melbourne’s laneway culture into the building’s interiors, so introduced a number of quintessential local café references into the lunchroom such as exposed industrial lighting and ceilings, with bentwood chairs offset by timber floorboards and finishes. ‘This keeps the space light and warm, providing a nice juxtaposition to the reception area which is more corporate and professional’.
A fascinating insight into how Melbourne’s design firms tackle the challenges of high-rise corporate office fit-outs some hundred metres above street level, Project Thirty Seven gives the sensation of space and understated corporate elegance without trying too hard.
